MONTHLY DAR NEWSLETTER VOL.3 ISSUE 11 NOVEMBER 2007/1428
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh
INTRODUCTION:
This is a monthly newsletter of the Garissa Muslim Children’s Home also referred to Dar-al-Aytam in short (Dar) in Arabic. The center was established in 1969 by the Young Muslim Association to provide care and protection to orphans and destitute children. Other than the orphans, the center has offered education to hundreds of children through its constituent institutions such as the nursery school, primary school, madrasa and high school. Services offered to the community include, Da’wah, Iftar, Qurbani, peace and reconciliation, water, mosques, advocacy and networking.
DAR CLOSING CEREMONY
This took place on 30/11/07. It was graced by the presence of the Manager, Sheikh Ismail and the Warden staff. The children were advised on various issues such as academics, discipline and Islamic Tarbiya. The centre will re-open on 4/1/08, InshaAllah.
YMPS – PRIVATE WING
1. Donation of text books – Kenya Commercial Bank – Garissa as a fulfillment of its social responsibility has donated text books worth Ksh.55,000/- to benefit the orphans. We greatly appreciate this kind of gesture and would urge other co-operate agencies to emulate the same.
SPORTS DAY
28th of November was identified as Sports Day in our school. Football and volleyball matches were played by class 4-7. On boys’ side, class 7 won the games while girls’ side class 5 emerged the best. Prizes were awarded to the overall winners and the best players.
YMHS
KCSE ended on 16/11/07 whereby 26 students completed the course. The rest of the school closed on 23/11/07. The Manager Sheikh AbdiSalam graced the occasion and gave a speech on performance, discipline and expectations for 2008.
YMA MADRASA
The madrasa was opened on 21st October 2007 after Ramadhan. Due to the normal December holiday given to the orphans, the madrasa was closed again on 28th November and will be re-opened on 5th January 2008, InshaAllah. This term there was a purchase of Islamic books for “Ibtidai” for the madrasa children which cost 46,000/-.
GARISSA-YMA PROGRAMMES 2007
The table below shows the various programmes undertaken by the Association within the Garissa complex. It indicates the current enrolment of the various institutions.
CONSTRUCTION OF DAR HAMMAD OFFICE BLOCK FOR HOUSEMASTER
Three of the four housemasters did not have proper offices. Considering the importance of their work in the implementation of the children’s daily routine, it became necessary to put up a decent office facility for them. Through the Director’s effort, donors have been found for the project which is estimated to cost Ksh.1.2 million. The project which consists of 4 office cubes with 3 stores was officially inaugurated (ground breaking) by the Director Sheikh Moti-ur-Rasool Alvi on Friday 2/11/2007 and is expected to be completed within one month.
