INTRODUCTION

This is a monthly newsletter of the Garissa Muslim Children’s Home also referred to Dar-al-Aytam in short (Dar) in Arabic. The center was established in 1969 by the Young Muslim Association to provide care and protection to orphans and destitute children. Other than the orphans, the center has offered education to hundreds of children through its constituent institutions such as the nursery school, primary school, madrasa and high school. Services offered to the community include, Da’wah, Iftar, Qurbani, peace and reconciliation, water, mosques, advocacy and networking.Young Muslim High School – Beginning of KCSE exams

KCSE which is the National exams done on reaching form 4 commenced on 23/10/06 and our school entered the pioneer class of 26 students – six of them are orphans from GMCH.

First Anniversary of Dar Newsletter

Highlights of our activities from Oct 05

This newsletter celebrates its first anniversary since we started in October 2005. Some of the highlights of the past issues are as follows:

Oct. 05: Iftar and Ramadhan Al-Kareem activities including distribution of Iftar packets and Iftar at the center mosque.

Nov. 05: Extra ordinary performance of Jama Maash
F.No. 849 orphan for the centre at the JKUAT who was one of the top in Diploma in IT at the college.

Dec 05: Community work done by the centre boys where they reconstructed a hut for a poor family in Bulla Iftin

Jan 06: Qurbani was the main event. 1098 goats and 53 cows were slaughtered on behalf of different agencies and individuals including Islamic Community Milli Gorus of Germany.

Feb 06:
· Relief distribution in collaboration with Qatar Charity.
· The construction of about 150ft long gabions at the farm by the GOK was a major event in that issue.

March 06: The ground breaking ceremony of the Tahfeedh Project which was done on 24/03/06. The opening of a nursery school at Sameera Mosque –Madogo is a major boost to the local community there.

April 06: The opening of a boarding facility for the form 4s to enable them maximize their time for better performance was the major event this month.

May 06:
· 21 new orphans are admitted to the centre from different parts of the country.
· I.H.H. of Germany sponsors 30 orphans for the Association.
· Aden Dika an old boy of the centre joins it as the new Warden.

June 06: Construction of the centre first permanent duksi commences on 19/6/06.

July 06: The Tahfeedh Project which started in March is officially opened on 17/7/2006 by the sponsor Br. M.A. Khan and his family. Also present were the Dujis M.P. Hon Hussein Maalim and GMCH Director Sheikh Moti-ur-Rasool Alvi.

August 06: The centre holds the annual Qur’an and Seera competition among six of the local madrasa and 54 participants. Ksh.56,000/- spent was donated by old boys and other well wishes.

Sept. 06
· Our high school becomes the top school in its first attempt of the District KCSE mock with a mean grade of B- (7.69)
· A group of youth led by the Director’s son Muhammad Alvi visit the centre and donate foodstuff worth Ksh.274,000/- for 100 families in Madogo division.

Oct 06: GMCH mosque whose extension was completed in 1994 has not been painted since then. By the grace of Allah the mosque this year got a new coat of paint both inside and outside at a cost of Ksh. 129,174/20 and the painting completed this month. This project was fully sponsored by M.A. Khan and family – May Allah (SWT) reward them for this noble deed.

Children of the year – Oct 05 to Oct 06.

In every issue we identified an orphan as the child of the month for his outstanding qualities such as discipline, academic excellence etc. The following were identified in some of the previous issues:
